The problem

Waste biomass is burned or left to decay, while industry lacks credible carbon removal.

Across Southern Africa, agricultural and forestry residues are often burned or left to decay, creating fire risks, emissions, and lost economic value. At the same time, industries face growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions while struggling to access credible, permanent carbon removal solutions. Degraded agricultural land and abandoned mine sites also require scalable restoration technologies.

PyroSA's approach

Turning waste biomass into permanent climate infrastructure.

PyroSA designs, finances, and operates modular pyrolysis plants that convert forestry and agricultural waste into high-quality biochar. The biochar permanently stores carbon for hundreds of years while creating verified carbon removal credits and regenerative soil products. Each plant serves multiple markets, including agriculture, cement manufacturing, mine rehabilitation, and voluntary carbon markets, creating a diversified revenue model while reducing waste and restoring ecosystems.

Where it's used

From first plant to a network across Southern Africa.

PyroSA's first commercial facility (PyroPSP) is being developed in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, with secured biomass supply from PSP Timbers. Its biochar is intended for regenerative agriculture, mine rehabilitation, cement and construction materials, and corporate carbon removal markets. The company plans to scale through a network of 12 modular plants across Southern Africa.

Impact

Why it matters.

Permanent carbon removal, restored land, and new circular value from unavoidable waste.

  • Removes carbon permanently

Converts waste biomass into biochar capable of storing carbon for 300+ years while generating verified carbon removal credits.

  • Restores degraded land

Improves soil health, water retention, and mine rehabilitation using regenerative biochar products.

  • Creates circular value

Transforms unavoidable agricultural and forestry waste into valuable climate infrastructure, creating new income streams while reducing emissions.
